Welcome to the CEO EDGE Podcast! in this episode we interview Jonathan Mara, a MacKay CEO Forums Chair and President of Guardian Angel Consulting Limited. 

Jonathan brings over 25 years of experience as an accomplished entrepreneur and business leader and over 21 years of experience in chairing CEO peer groups to his role as a forum chair with MacKay CEO Forums. Jonathan has found his true passion in helping organizational leadership teams succeed in their business. As a mentor and coach he is known for fostering high trust in peer group environments. Using emotional intelligence leadership strategies, he achieves deeper disclosure in identifying the true root cause of issues leading to breakthrough results.

In addition to his extensive experience in helping organizational leadership teams get what they want out of their business, Jonathan is the President of Guardian Angel Consulting Ltd. where he is a Professional EOS Implementer specializing in facilitating executive teams utilizing the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to get and stay on the same page in growing their business. He also specializes in the areas of corporate and financial structuring, strategic planning and execution.

Jonathan shares his leadership strengths as Director of the Spartans Foundation which supports student athletes at Trinity Western University. He is a member of the President’s Club of Simon Fraser University from which he graduated in 1987 with a B.SC (Kinesiology). Jonathan was also past Vice- President and Director of Basketball B.C, 2004 – 2012.

Jonathan completed “The Birthing of Giants” (a 3 year entrepreneurial-based business program) at the MIT Enterprise Forum in Boston, Mass. He spends his off time in the great outdoors camping and hiking. He is an active gardener and with his wife, Joan with whom he founded and manages The Spirit Garden in South Surrey, BC.

Welcome to the CEO EDGE Podcast! In this episode we interview Peter Brown and learn about what it takes to become a Best Managed Company.

Peter E.  Brown is a Partner in Deloitte Canada.  Peter has 30 years’ experience in public accounting, serving clients in both the public and private sectors.  He has gained significant international experience in assurance and advisory services and has extensive experience with business advisory services.  Peter served as Managing Partner for Deloitte’s Atlantic Practice until 2008 when Peter relocated to Toronto to assume the role of Managing Partner and National Leader for Private Company Services.   In 2011, Peter’s responsibilities were expanded to include the entire middle market for Deloitte Canada.  In 2013 Peter relinquished these responsibilities and was appointed to Deloitte Canada’s Client Cabinet which is comprised of senior leaders with firm wide market responsibilities.  Peter is currently the national co-leader for Canada’s Best Managed Companies Program. Peter has also served on the Board of Directors for Deloitte Canada.

Peter is the co-author of The Power of The Best, published in September 2012 Peter is a frequent speaker on topics of entrepreneurship and what makes Best Managed companies unique. Peter has been widely quoted in the print media across Canada and is passionate about passing on the lessons learned from Best Managed companies to help make all Canadian businesses better.

Over its 24 year history, the Canada’s Best Managed Companies program has fostered and celebrated business excellence among privately held Canadian companies. Each year, hundreds of entrepreneurial companies compete for the designation in a comprehensive application process focused on four key evaluative pillars: strategy, capability, commitment and financial performance. The all-encompassing approach means winners are selected and recognized for the efforts of the entire organization. Best Managed companies are invited to celebrate their success at an annual symposium and gala in Toronto. Following its success in Canada, the Best Managed program has been adopted by Mexico, Ireland and the Netherlands and soon to be additional countries, building an international network of industry leaders.

Welcome to the CEO EDGE podcast! In this episode, we interview Tom Shepansky, Managing Partner at Rethink, MacKay CEO Forums members and Innovator Partner.

Tom grew up in Edmonton and studied marketing at NAIT and the University of Alberta. After gaining experience at two Edmonton agencies, Tom moved to Vancouver to work at Palmer Jarvis, where he advanced to the role of director of client services. In 1999, Tom founded Rethink with his two creative partners— Chris and Ian.

At Rethink, Tom helps drive the strategic process in both Vancouver and Toronto. With his help, clients get the right strategy that ultimately leads to the best creative idea. Tom also manages the business side of the business—  negotiating contracts and ensuring the agency delivers on those contracts. On top of that, he plays a leadership role within the account service, production, administration and accounting groups, and also provides direction on IT and finance. In his spare time, he loves to play with his kids, Nolan and Julia, and travel with his wife, Roxanne. He also enjoys cycling, fly-fishing, golfing, cooking, and relaxing on Salt Spring Island.

Sue is an accomplished coach, strategic advisor and forum chair who has been working with CEOs and Executives for over 20 years. Known for her ability to create edgy conversations that help transform leaders and businesses, Sue has an uncanny ability to interpret body language, which she uses to maximize group engagement. She is highly valued for her insight, intelligence and above all else, her ability to integrate ideas, thoughts and strategy.

Sue’s passion lies in creating alignment between strategy, culture and leadership, which she believes is essential to high performance. She is the principle consultant and founder of Solus Consulting, which supports organizations in the areas of strategic planning, culture evolution, team and leadership development and change implementation. Create the vision and plan – identify the culture needed to support execution – and develop and hold leaders accountable for implementation of both. That’s where the magic lies for Sue.

Consulting for 9 years, Sue previously worked as a senior Human Resources leader for a large Vancouver based organization. The youngest senior leader in the organization, Sue received two awards for her leadership during her tenure in that role. She left the company to pursue her own business and over the past decade has worked with some of the top leaders in Canada. Invited to work with John Furlong and his Executive Team in 2005, Sue played a critical role in developing the Strategic Plan for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. She then continued to support the organization over the five-year lead up to the Olympics, working closely with the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams in the areas of culture, leadership and team development.

An avid learner, Sue received her BBA, with a focus on organizational development and an additional major in psychology, from Simon Fraser University in 1989. She is a Certified Co-Active Coach through the Coaches Training Institute in San Rafael, California and is also accredited in the Insights Discovery System, Change Implementation Methodology and an Emotional Intelligence tool.

Born and raised in North Vancouver, Sue still resides there with her husband (high school sweetheart) and their two boys and two cats. She is very committed to her community and spends much of her free time volunteering with community non-profit organizations.

In his executive capacity, he has built companies from the ground up to become industry leaders in their segments. Mr. Cordoba currently sits on various company boards and is Chair of the Board for Mr. Lube. He is an enthusiastic supporter of many community groups with a personal passion for organizations focused on children’s health and well-being.

Mike is the father of two and is an avid golfer who believes in golf technology hence he has one the largest collections of golf drivers and putters in Western Canada. Mike is a passionate boater and collector of both classic cars and Chicago Bears memorabilia.

Teryluz is a Partner in Aon Hewitt’s Talent, Rewards & Performance practice based in Chicago and currently leads the Engagement service line for the United States. She has more than 15 years of consulting experience in the areas of engagement, change management, talent management, leadership development, and organizational communication. She specializes in complex, multi-country projects for large companies undergoing major business transformation and HR strategy and program implementation. 

Prior to her current role, Teryluz led Aon Hewitt’s Change Management consulting services for the United States and was the Talent, Rewards & Performance Practice Leader for Aon Hewitt in Latin America. She also led the Latin America Regional Engagement Team for more than six years and was an active member of Aon Hewitt’s Global Engagement Council.

Some of her recent clients include ExxonMobil, Memorial Hermann, Microsoft, Moody’s, Mylan, and RGA. She has also consulted with some of the world’s largest companies in the retail and pharmaceutical industries.

Teryluz is a frequent speaker at professional and industry conferences both domestically and internationally, and has published more than 30 articles and white papers on the topics of engagement, HR strategy, talent management, leadership, and organizational effectiveness. 

Teryluz holds a master’s degree in communication and human resources from Cornell University. She is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese and is certified in change management by Prosci and on several leadership and organizational assessment tools, including Barrett Cultural Values Assessment, Hogan Personality Assessment, and Facet5 Leadership Assessments.

Bill Tucker is Chief Executive Officer of Omicron Canada Inc. He is MacKay CEO Forums member and Innovator Partner. 

Omicron is a 150 person integrated development, design and construction firm with offices in Vancouver, Calgary and Victoria. As one of Western Canada’s largest fully integrated firms, Omicron provides turnkey solutions to clients in the Retail, Institutional, Commercial, Industrial, Residential, and Mixed-Use sectors. Bill is responsible for heading the business through strategic acquisitions, organic expansion, business development and client partnering. Omicron is a platinum Best Managed Company.

Bill has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from UBC and an MBA from Queen’s University.  He is also a registered professional engineer in BC. In 2000, Bill joined Omicron as a Principal of the firm and became Managing Principal in 2004 and CEO in 2010.

In addition to his day-to-day business activities, Bill is committed to giving back to the industry and community. He has held numerous non-profit board positions and is a frequent presenter and moderator of panel discussions.  Bill was Chair of the annual Building for Kids Golf Tournament for 10 years where he raised over $1.5 million for BC Children’s Hospital.

He has been recognized as Citizen of the Year in 2007 and Philanthropist of the Year in 2010 for his philanthropic work in his City.
